Network Compatibility between XP and windows 7

As many of you, I'm working with XP for years now, and I like it. I skipped vista because it wasn't very stable. My PC is getting a little old now and it's about time to replace it. But I have a few pc and laptop in my home-network environment and they all can work together, which I love. I remember that there where some issues with homenetworking in the past between windows 98, millenium and XP. Different operation systems had problems recognising eachother (couldn't be found).
Now that XP is running out and everybody starts to work with windows 7, I wonder whether these are compatible.
I do not want to loose my home connection and still want to share and work files between different computers. And I'm not interesting in changing 4 OS on all my pc and laptop.
So my obvious question is :
Is windows 7 compatible with windows XP when it comes to home-network and recognising all computers in the network and able to share files. Are they recognised automaticly or does it needs several settings? Are there known bugs?
Thank you for any reply

I gave up on this a long time ago. I am not sure if windows 7 was compatable with anything. Can not even get the 32 and 64 bit versions to co-operate with each other. Finally found a torrent with activated version of windows 7 pro 32 bit last year and have had a year of decent service. I still have the old hard drive with XP just in case. It seems to work decently with the pirated version I now use. The files from these two will now work from machine to the other
