A David Phelps Christmas – One Wintery Night

Though One Wintry Night is rife with celebratory joy at the birth of the Savior, David injects a healthy dose of wit and whimsy into the project, as well. There are mainstream favorites like a jazzy version of Elvis’ “Blue Christmas,” “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” done in a 40′s bebop style that is unmistakably David Phelps, and the can’t-help-but-get-happy-when-you-hear-it, “Santa Claus Tonight,” a tune David wrote when his youngest daughter declared she was going to stay up late to see Santa.
“I love Christmas,” David laughs. “I have a young family and Christmas is a really big time of year for us. In the middle of all the joy and mystery of explaining to our kids about the birth of Jesus, there is also the excitement of Santa Claus and all the gifts around the tree. There is so much emphasis on Santa, and the season is so commercially-driven that we want to make sure our kids know the real meaning of the season.”
Among the six original songs that David wrote for One Wintry Night, one has a special place in his heart. “I wrote ‘One King’ to sing with my sister,” David muses. “But she had gone through a significant illness and just wasn’t able to do it when the time came. The Isaacs family and our family are friends, so I called Sonya Isaacs and asked if she would step in. Sonya is a consummate artist in her own right, and she really put her own stamp on that song.”
Another David Phelps original, “If Everyone Believed,” came straight out of his childhood. “It’s about having Christmas with your family where everything is warm and loving,” David explains. “But when you see the evening news you see a world where everything is not wonderful. This song is a child’s wish that everyone believed, and if they did then what a happy place the world could be.”
David also points to “If Christmas Never Came,” as a signature song. “It’s a very cinematic piece that really takes you on a journey,” he says. “It ponders what the world would be like if Jesus had never come. I love the emotional impact of that song. It doesn’t have the soaring high notes, or the screaming strings, but it really hits hard.”
It is true that Christmas is for children. But with One Wintry Night, David Phelps reminds us that it is for grown-ups, too. For even with the hassle of fighting the shopping mall crowds, the unending litany of crass commercialism, and news reports that belie peace on earth, it is still a glorious time to recall that long ago, in a lowly stable, while a young couple bore witness, was born the King of kings, and Lord of lords.

Avalon – Joy

From the opening moments of the electronically influenced “Joy (to the World),” it’s clear that Avalon has set out to offer a production that stands out among Christmas albums. This assessment is sealed with the next song, “The Angel’s Medley.” It begins with a standard “First Noël” solemnity, and climaxes into a funk-disco rendition of “Hark the Herald Angles Sing,” in which one can imagine the four members of this quartet sporting their flashiest silk duds. But that is not to say that Joy: A Christmas Collection doesn’t have its standard Christmas trappings. Accompanied by the London Session Orchestra, this record comes complete with all of the harps, bells, and strings-simulated snow flurries that anyone could want. With the added fireside glow and up-front energy of Avalon’s dazzling vocal expertise, this disc is sure to cause anyone to break out the hot chocolate, roast some chestnuts, and bust some good dance moves around the Christmas tree. –Israel Button
